Storm coming? Tips to prepare your greenhouse!

Are you prepared for a storm? Have you prepared a scenario and keep adequate emergency materials nearby? Here are some tips on how to be well prepared.

Prevention

  • Make sure you have a sufficient supply of repair kits, wood or plastic sheets on your company to repair holes in the greenhouse.
  • Make sure you have tempered glass in stock.
  • Put the windows on a small open position to shorten the clogging time.
  • Put containers and other loose parts in a safe place (e.g. in the barn).
  • Make a list of emergency phone numbers in case of damage.

During the storm

  • Close the windows on the windward side and put them slightly ajar on the leeward side.
  • Make sure there is no one present in the greenhouse. Consider the safety of your staff!
  • Bring the greenhouse at sufficient temperature and open the screen installations.
  • Consult your gas contract and take into account a possible maximum hourly capacity for gas consumption.
  • Avoid high tube temperatures. Set your maximum 'tube' so that no damage can occur to your plants. If you use more (or less) gas than is allowed in your gas contract, report it to your gas supplier. Appeal to force majeure.

Glass damage?

  • If you use more (or less) gas than is allowed in your gas contract, report it to your gas supplier. Appeal to force majeure.
  • Identify precisely where glass damage is located, so that it can be repaired as soon as possible.
  • Try to repair holes in the greenhouse as soon as possible temporary (e.g. with wooden plates)
  • Mark places where windows have been repaired.
  • If you place an emergency wall, use sturdy materials and bubble wrap.
  • When placing an emergency wall, take into account heating / ventilation and screen groups. Try to keep it the same.
  • If you need to clean up glass help or perform emergency repairs, please also contact disaster relief in your region. They can help you with people and equipment.
  • Monitor your organic crop protection and pollinators. The balance may be disturbed.
  • Verify preventive pest management (roots or crop) to see if further crop damage can occur.
  • Is there a potential for development of root diseases by disturbed plant balance and / or rainwater that has come into the greenhouse? Consider ceasing recycling for the time being.
  • Report the damage to your insurance company or agent.
