Exact sowing precision with Urbinati drum seeder

It is not only the market for fresh vegetables and tomatoes that is changing to a more computerized growing process. Also the processing tomato industry in Turkey is replacing the open field for greenhouses. ''In the north-west side of Turkey, near Istanbul, and in the south there’s a growing investment in new greenhouses,” explains Alessandro Mazzacano from Urbinati, the market leader in horticultural automation. "Not only for processing tomatoes but also for fresh tomatoes. Of course it’s expensive to built a greenhouse for processing tomatoes, but we see that most of the companies that buy a greenhouse in Turkey are not Turkish companies. They choose to invest here because of the low labour costs and the good climate conditions.”

Now that Turkey is on the rise to become a very important player in the automated horticulture industry, Urbinati is noticing a growing demand for their automation products such as drum seeders.

Due to the situation in Russia, more and more companies are keeping an eye on the Turkish market. ''Antalya is becoming strategical for the south Mediterranean countries and for the Middle east. Also, what’s happening in Russia is going to create much more business in Turkey. That’s why we pay so much attention to this market,” says Mazzacano.

The drum seeders are popular because of the hygiene and very exact sowing precision of 100%. But the machines are quite an investment and the Turkish growers are known for the fact that they search for the lowest price on everything. And that’s why a lot of companies develop machines especially for the Turkish market. ''We don’t do that. Our products are placed in quite a high range and we try to fight for this position. That is also why our distributor is a partner that focuses on the higher part of the market.

Urbinati's distributor for Turkey, is Titiz Agro; a distributor that is the exclusive dealer of De Ruiter and Monsanto. "Their customers work with high quality, expensive seeds that require consistent and quality handling"

At the Growtech, Urbinati had their Beta seeder on display in the booth of Titiz Agro. ''This machine can fill up to 800 trays per hour. It’s perfect for single sowing, so one variety at the time.” The machine contains software that’s quite easy to understand. ''We use drawings instead of descriptions. In this way, the user can see directly what he needs to do, without any difficult translation." According to Alessandro, the Return of Investment on the machine is in general between 3 to 5 years, depending on what version you buy.
