Hoogendoorn tip: Humidity issues under closed screens

Energy screens are necessary in order to limit energy loss in greenhouses. The disadvantage is that these tend to cause humidity issues. The most common way to address these problems is to first heat the pipes, then to make an opening in the energy screens, before opening vents (windows). Although this method may work, it is proven not to be very effective. Research related to 'Next Generation Cultivation' shows that higher energy efficiency is achieved by a reversal of the sequence of the traditional method. This means that the first step is to ventilate above a closed energy screen, the second step is to create a small opening and then, only as a last resort, extra heating should be used. By keeping the energy screen closed as much as possible, temperature fluctuations that are caused by cold air flow can be avoided.
