Largest greenhouse complex in Northern Russia being built in Murmansk region
This investment project is a priority for the government, thus it is well supported and subsidized. In the fields of the complex it is planned to grow cucumbers, tomatoes and herbs. Vegetables will be grown not in the ground but in mineral-cotton pallets. First harvest is scheduled for 2015.
According to the deputy chairman for the committee of agriculture and food market in the region Svetlana Sukhova, the local producers intend to increase their competitiveness and expand production. The absence of imported Western agricultural products will not affect Murmansk, as import in this area makes only 3% of the volume consumed. Most of the products are imported from other regions of Russia and CIS countries.
