Lambert Peat Moss continues to focus upon customers’ needs

Lambert Peat Moss Inc., founded in 1928, is one of the true Pioneers in the development of the peat moss industry in North America. The fourth generation of Lamberts is still operating from the original location at Riviere-Ouelle, Quebec, along the South shore of the St. Lawrence River. Over the years, they have expanded with additional bogs and facilities along the North shore and near Lake St. John. The original product line consisted of screened and bagged Peat Moss.

Due to the various ages of the bogs and locations in Quebec, Lambert has an extended harvest season and processing capacity. Lambert has access to over nine grades of peat moss that can be screened and blended according to the specific needs of its customers. Lambert’s Technical Team maps the bogs to identify peats by age and colour because these parameters help define the physical and chemical properties of the peats. These properties are important to its customers because they help determine their best uses.

The youngest peats are light colour, either blond or white. These peats are used extensively by the greenhouse industry because they are very fibrous with good air-water relations and are recommended for plant containers and shallow trays. The brown peats are older than the blond peats and are less fibrous. Brown peats are less variable and are often used in blending of peats in order to provide more consistent performance. The oldest peats that Lambert harvests are black peats. These peats have very poor physical properties but are a very good source of organic carbon for amending poor mineral soils and feedstock for microbial activities. There are older peats in a bog but they are not harvested for horticultural activities.

The different grades (colours) of peats are transported to the screening facilities separately and are screened separately or as blends according to the desired use. The screening of peat is required to remove unwanted sticks and chunks of peat. Lambert produces three sizes of peat. They are fine (< 7.0 mm), medium (0-10 mm) and coarse (0-20 mm). Lambert has the ability to custom sieve peats for extra fineness or coarseness upon request.

Lambert also offers a large selection of professional growing mixes for many specific uses and production. The LM series is a complete line of professional growing mixes that uses professional grade Canadian Blond Peat Moss as a base to provide growers with a consistent growing media that they can count on. These mixes use other components including perlite, vermiculite and composted bark.

Lambert has recently introduced the Aggregate Free Media (AFM) series which is 100% screened and selected peat that provides increased air capacity, increased moisture retention and reduced shrinkage. The series include Germination Mix (AFM-1) and an All-Purpose Mix (AFM-3) that provide the most practical and cost effective product for growing commercial plants.

To meet customers’ needs, Lambert offers the option to custom blend virtually any formulation that suits the grower. The pH can be adjusted up or down, choice of peat, moisture content adjusted, choice of nutrient charge, organic-approved inputs, biologicals or disease-suppressive products, provide endless possibilities to fulfil a grower’s expectations. Lambert can assist retailers to develop their own private label of retail potting soils and landscape to differentiate their offerings to the public.

Lambert also provides products for the Environment (spills and remediation), Landscaping (Green Roofs, soil preparation and Aquatic gardens), Turf (construction and maintenance), Forestry (reforestation) and Agriculture (speciality crops including tobacco, small berry crops, mushrooms and worm culture).
