UAF to dismantle campus greenhouse

Preparations for a new power plant at the University of Alaska Fairbanks are crowding out an adjacent greenhouse and vegetable garden, which sit in the shadow of the planned $245 million facility.

UAF plans to dismantle the 2,700-square-foot greenhouse later this summer, forcing the university to find a new home for more than 25,000 seedlings it grows each spring to decorate its campus.

Scott Bell, the associate vice chancellor for Facilities Services at UAF, said the greenhouse be dismantled by August as work begins on the new plant.

Pieces of the greenhouses will either be used on other campus buildings or be sold through a process used for auctioning surplus materials.

The elimination of the greenhouse will spur a search for new growing space at UAF. The lower greenhouse was used from February to May for growing flowers and other plants that are used to beautify the campus each summer.
