Tomato prices saw a further decline in the week transitioning from April to May, dropping to an average of 87 euro cents per kilo for both loose and cluster tomatoes. Cucumber prices, on the other hand, experienced a significant rebound on the Flemish auction clocks during a week marked by numerous growers undergoing crop rotation.
Tomato prices are significantly below the levels of 2023 and equal to the prices in week 18 of 2022.
The average auction price for cucumbers at the auctions of the Association of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives (VBT) was 41.6 euro cents in week 18.
Further examination of the average prices in week 18 reveals significant increases in the price of eggplants, reaching just over 1.36 euros per kilo, as well as for greenhouse cauliflower (3 euros per piece) and lettuce heads (64.5 euro cents per piece). With this price surge, the price for lettuce heads rises above the five-year average again after challenging periods. The demand for lettuce benefits from sunny weather.
The median price for strawberries across various varieties in week 18 stands at 4.22 euros per kilo. Elsanta is quoted at 4.23 euros and Sonsation at approximately 4.62 euros per kilo. Prices that are just above the five-year average. Strawberry productions are still lagging behind after a dark period.
